Attorney Leah Morabito attended the the 9th Annual Meeting of the Academy of Special Needs Planners in Charlotte, North Carolina in March. The three day conference included presentations by some of the nation’s top special needs planners who shared their extensive knowledge and expertise on planning for loved ones with special needs.
Some of the highlights were understanding the new Able Act (a new savings plan somewhat like a 529 account), leaving retirement benefits to persons with special needs, the Affordable Care Act one year later, and identifying tax traps and financing nuances for families with special needs children. There was an opportunity at the end of the conference to ask questions of the panel of experts. The conference was very well attended and extremely well run.
Attending conferences such as this is one of the best ways for an attorney to keep up with the ever changing laws and best practices in their area of concentration. Any time you have a gathering of the best and the brightest along with an energetic group of attendees, there is sure to be a much needed exchange of knowledge and practical tips that can be used to improve one’s practice.
