Maryland’s New Smoke Detector Law

Effective January 1, 2018 all battery operated smoke detectors must be replaced with alarms that are powered by “Long-Life” batteries, with a ten year life span. This new regulation does not affect homes that are protected by smoke detectors that are tied into an electrical system. However, the Montgomery Fire & Rescue Service recommends that both battery and electrical systems be replaced every ten years.
