Stuart
Muntzing Skok is a principal in the
Firm. She is experienced in handling complex
family law matters, including divorce
litigation, custody litigation, separation
agreements, pre-nuptial agreements, child
support and alimony, property distribution,
business valuation, grandparent visitation,
third-party custody/visitation,
contempt/enforcement actions, modification
actions, domestic violence, adoption and
guardianship. She is certified in
Divorce
Mediation and Collaborative Law. She is
currently Section Co-Chair of the Family Law
Section for the Montgomery County Bar
Association for 2007-2008.
Stuart is experienced in negotiating and
litigating complex cases involving high net
worth individuals, individuals who are
self-employed and matters which require
complex tax strategies. She represents
parents in contested custody/visitation
cases and is also regularly appointed by the
Court to represent minor children in
contested custody/visitation cases. She is certified in Collaborative Law through the Maryland Collaborative Practice Council, Inc., (MCPC),
www.marylandcollaborativepractice.com, for which she is a founding member. She is also a member of the local Collaborative Divorce Association, Inc.,
www.collaborativedivorcemd.com.
Stuart has published various articles
including
Grandparent Rights ,
Parent
Coordination and
Best Interest Attorneys. In
order to assist clients with protections
against domestic violence, she published the
Handbook on Domestic Violence. She also
currently publishes weekly
Divorce Articles
in the Gazette. She has testified before the
Maryland House Judiciary Committee in
support of child support legislation, which
was passed by the Committee. When the
legislation became law, Stuart published an
article entitled "Maryland Extends Child
Support."
Stuart regularly speaks on family law
issues, including the Montgomery County
Commission for Women. She spoke before the
Family Law Section for Montgomery County on
“Equitable Distribution of Deferred
Compensation Plans,” and presented “Trial of
a Domestic Case” before the Montgomery Inn
of Court.
Stuart received her undergraduate degree
from the University of Denver in Political
Science, Speech Communications and
Philosophy in 1991. As a member of the
University Debate Team, she competed in
regional competitions and received finalist
awards. Before attending law school, Stuart
lived in London as an Intern for William
Cash, Member of Parliament for Stafford.
Stuart graduated from West Virginia
University College of Law in 1995, where she
was awarded first place in the Moot Trial
Competition. During law school, she was an
Intern/Law Clerk for the Honorable Charles
R. Richey, deceased, United States District
Court for the District of Columbia. She is
admitted to practice in the Maryland,
District of Columbia, Federal District
Courts and the United States Supreme Court.
Stuart is serving a second term as Co-Chair
of the Family Law Section for the Montgomery
County Bar Association. Stuart was Co-Chair
of the Family Law Section in 2001 and was
named Section Co-Chair of the Year by the
Bar. She was also Program Co-Chair of the
Family Law Section, organizing monthly
programs on how family law attorneys can
improve their skills at each stage of
litigation, from pre-suit through appeal.
Stuart has served as a Pupil and Barrister
with the Montgomery Inn of Court. The
Montgomery Inn of Court is part of the
American Inns of Court, which is a national
organization. Each month, one group within
the Montgomery Inn presents a program to
educate the Inn on a specific issue or area
of the law. The goals for the Inn are for
lawyers to achieve a higher standard of
excellence, to develop a deeper sense of
professionalism and to build a more
insightful awareness of ethical standards.
Pupils are new practitioners and Barristers
are experienced lawyers who have
demonstrated good character and a desire to
improve and refine their skills as trial and
appellate advocates. Stuart served on
Executive Committee of the Inn, and was
Program Co-Chair.
Stuart has served on the Executive Committee
for the Montgomery County Women’s Bar
Association. She was Co-Chair of the Auction
Committee for the Montgomery County Women’s
Bar Association Auction, which raises
substantial funds to help pro bono services
for clients who cannot afford legal services
and to provide college scholarships. Stuart
also served as President of the Montgomery
County Women’s Bar Association.
Stuart serves on the Peer Review Plan
Committee for the Attorney Grievance
Commission of Maryland. The Attorney
Grievance Commission is the entity which
oversees enforcement of the Rules of
Professional Conduct which direct the code
of conduct for lawyers. The Peer Review
Committee Panels are comprised of lawyers
and lay persons who hear and make
recommendations in cases involving alleged
violations of the Rules of Professional
Conduct.
Stuart is a life-long resident of Montgomery
County from Potomac, Maryland. She graduated
from Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda,
Maryland. Her husband, Larry, is a real
estate attorney in Washington, D.C.
and has served as President of CHI (Center
for Handicapped Individuals). They have 2
children, Jade who was born in 2001, and
Cole who was born in 2004, and who has
special needs. Stuart is actively involved
in bringing parents of children with special
needs together in the community through the
Maryland DNS (Down Syndrome Network). Her
mother, Nan Muntzing, is co-founder of the
Potomac Theatre Company. Her father, Manning
Muntzing, now retired and consulting,
practiced international nuclear law in
Washington, D.C.
