contractors in Maryland must be licensed by the State. The license is
obtained through the Maryland Home Improvement Commission, which can
also confirm whether or not a particular contractor is licensed. The

The contractor is required to also provide its MHIC number on all
contracts and work orders.
In addition to passing a written test, a contractor must contribute to
the MHIC Guaranty Fund. This Fund is used to compensate homeowners who
are injured through the negligence or breach of contract or
misrepresentation of a licensed contractor. The Fund is not intended to
compensate homeowners who contract with an unlicensed contractor.
Therefore, it is always in a homeowner’s best interest to use a licensed
home improvement contractor.
