How Do You Know If A Home Improvement Contactor Is Licensed?

All home improvement contractors in Maryland must be licensed by the State. The license is obtained through the Maryland Home Improvement Commission, which can also confirm whether or not a particular contractor is licensed. The phone number for the MHIC is 410-230-6309 (1-888-218-5925).

The contractor is required to also provide its MHIC number on all contracts and work orders.

In addition to passing a written test, a contractor must contribute to the MHIC Guaranty Fund. This Fund is used to compensate homeowners who are injured through the negligence or breach of contract or misrepresentation of a licensed contractor. The Fund is not intended to compensate homeowners who contract with an unlicensed contractor.

Therefore, it is always in a homeowner’s best interest to use a licensed home improvement contractor.
