Legislature Poised to Shorten Separation Period for Divorcing Couples

Both houses of the Maryland Legislature have passed a bill shortening the time of separation for divorcing couples.  Currently, Maryland permits a divorce based on a 12 month, mutual and voluntary separation or a 2 year separation for any reason.  The new bill proposes shortening the two year separation time period to 12 months thus making a 12 month separation, for any reason, grounds for absolute divorce.   This will have the effect of shortening the time required for many couples to obtain a divorce.  At the same time, however, the legislature, declined to act on various measures that would have simplified the process of obtaining a divorce based on a mutual and voluntary separation.
